Can a Doctor of Osteopathy become certified by the ABD as an MDS subspecialist?

Can a Doctor of Osteopathy become certified by the ABD as an MDS subspecialist?

An osteopath who meets these criteria may sit for the MDS exam:

  1. Possess a current, valid, full, and unrestricted license to practice osteopathy in at least one state or province within the United States or Canada.
  2. Hold primary certification in general dermatology from ABD.
  3. Be up to date in Continuing Certification (CCP) if certification by ABD is time-limited.
  4. Demonstrate experience in the subspecialty by successfully completing the ACGME-accredited Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology (MSDO) fellowship or attesting that you are currently performing micrographic surgery as part of your patient care activities. (The practice pathway is available only through 2025)

A physician with an M.D. or D.O. degree who completed a dermatology residency in a program that was NOT accredited by the ACGME during the individual’s training period (i.e., accredited by the American Osteopathic Association) is not eligible for ABD certification and therefore is not eligible for MDS subspecialty certification.
