Pediatric Dermatology Research Track

The Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance, the research arm of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, and the American Board of Dermatology have established a research pathway in pediatric dermatology that combines the 2+2 research track with pediatric dermatology fellowship.  ABD will consider each candidate for this pathway on an individual basis.  The application for this pathway must be submitted to the ABD by the end of the first year of the residency program and must be approved before matching into a pediatric dermatology fellowship.

Details

  1. The candidate must be in good standing and considered on track to be able to complete the necessary training to function independently as a dermatologist after the 2.25 years of clinical training by the end of their first year of dermatology residency training.
  2. Candidates must be at an institution that has an ACGME accredited dermatology residency and pediatric dermatology fellowship and a research program that will support the pathway. 
  3. Letters of support and commitment to the pathway by the Department Chair, Program Directors of the dermatology residency, the pediatric dermatology fellowship program and the research fellowship mentor must be provided with the application to the ABD.
  4. The schedule after the prerequisite PGY1 year, is as follows:
    1. Year 1 & 2; general dermatology residency
    2. Year 3; pediatric dermatology fellowship
    3. Year 4; 0.25 clinical general dermatology and 0.75 research training
    4. Year 5; research

Eligibility for Certification
The candidate will not be considered Board Eligible until after successfully completing Year 4.  Upon successful completion of Year 4 the candidate would be eligible to sit for both the general dermatology certification examination followed by the pediatric dermatology examination.
