Residents and Fellows

Dermatology residents train for three years in an ACGME-accredited dermatology residency training program in the United States or in a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada dermatology residency training program in Canada, following completion of one year of approved postgraduate training. There are 150 accredited dermatology programs in the United States and 9 programs in Canada. Approximately 530 residents graduate each year.

Following primary certification by the ABD, a dermatologist can decide to pursue additional specialized training in Dermatopathology, Pediatric Dermatology, or Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology. This involves a year of training in an approved fellowship training program. There are 53 Dermatopathology programs, 31 Pediatric Dermatology programs, and 78 Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology programs in the United States. Fellows who have completed fellowship training in Dermatopathology or Pediatric Dermatology are eligible to take the subspecialty examination in those fields.
