Diplomates who are currently practicing micrographic dermatologic surgery (MDS, or Mohs surgery) may apply through the ABD’s practice pathway now through May 10 to take the exam September 23-28, 2024. This pathway, which does not require completion of an MSDO fellowship (micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology), ends in 2025.
The 2025 administration is the last time the ABD will accept applications for the MDS Exam through the practice pathway. To qualify, candidates must independently perform Mohs surgery as part of their practice after residency. Surgeries performed during residency training do not count.
Beginning with the 2026 MDS Exam administration, all dermatologists must complete an ACGME-accredited MSDO fellowship before taking the MDS subspecialty certification exam.
Residents may not apply for the MDS Exam in the year they graduate from residency because surgeries performed as part of training do not count toward practice pathway qualification.
