The American Board of Dermatology's Board of Directors comprises 16 volunteer dermatologists, 1 Public Member, 1 Young Diplomate Observer member and 2 Director-elect members.
The volunteer dermatologist Directors serve a 9-year term. They are elected from a pool of nominees by rank choice vote. The pool of Director nominees most commonly consists of those with distinguished service on an ABD Item Writing Committee.
The Public Member is a non-physician with health-related experience or knowledge in areas relevant to the Board. Any current or former ABD Director may nominate an individual for consideration as a Public Member. This member votes on Board matters but does not vote in new Director elections.
The Young Diplomate Observer represents the viewpoint of newly certified dermatologists. This member is selected by the Board of Directors from a pool of nominees solicited from an open call to all diplomates. This member serves a 3-year term and does not vote on Board matters.
Directors are elected one year before their term begins. During the year leading up to their term, incoming Directors have a Director-elect status. Director-elects are invited to all Board meetings and encouraged to participate in the discussions. However, they will not have a vote on Board matters until their official 9-year term begins.
Carl V. Washington, MD (January 2015 - June 2024) - ABD President, July 2023 - June 2024
Decatur, GA
Dr. Washington practices at Dermatology Associates of Georgia. His clinical expertise is in Mohs Surgery for the management of skin cancer, and the treatment of patients with melanoma and high risk pigmented lesions. He joined Dermatology Associates of Georgia after spending 23 years on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology.
Dr. Washington earned his MD at the University of Michigan and completed his residency in Dermatology at Henry Ford Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in Mohs and Dermatology Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine.
He is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and in micrographic dermatologic surgery, and is participating in continuing certification.
He served on the ABD’s Surgical Dermatology Content Committee from 2011-2013 and was elected to the Board of Directors for a term starting in 2015.
Moise L. Levy, MD (January 2015 - June 2024) - ABD Vice President, July 2023 - June 2024 (served as President January - June 2023)

Dr. Levy was the inaugural Physician-in-Chief and chief of pediatric dermatology at Dell Children’s Medical Center where he practices pediatric/adolescent dermatology. He is certified in dermatology and pediatric dermatology by the ABD and is certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics. He is participating in ABD continuing certification.
Also, he is a professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine (Dermatology) at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School.
He earned his MD from the University of Texas, Houston. He completed his residency in pediatrics at the University of Texas, Houston, and his residency in dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine.
In addition to general pediatric/adolescent dermatology, Dr. Levy has a special interest in genetic skin diseases, birthmarks, and neonatal skin disorders.
He served on the recertification exam committee for pediatric dermatology from 1995-1998. He was elected to the ABD Board of directors for a term starting in 2015.
Tammie C. Ferringer, MD (January 2016 - June 2025)

Dr. Ferringer is the dermatopathology section head for Geisinger Medical Laboratories. She is also an associate in the Department of Dermatology at Geisinger Medical Center and serves as the director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship Program.
Dr. Ferringer earned her MD at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She completed her residency in dermatology at Geisinger and a fellowship in dermatopathology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
She is certified by the ABD in dermatology and dermatopathology and is participating in continuing certification.
After serving on the Dermatopathology Content Development Committee from 2012-2014, she was elected to the ABD Board of Directors for a term starting in 2016.
Anna L. Bruckner, MD (January 2017 - June 2026)
Aurora, CO
Dr. Bruckner is a professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus. She is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and in pediatric dermatology, and is participating in continuing certification. At Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora and at Denver Health Medical Center, she treats children with a range of skin problems. Her areas of expertise include atopic dermatitis (eczema), epidermolysis bullosa and other genetic skin disorders, and vascular birthmarks.
Dr. Bruckner earned her medical degree at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. She completed residencies in pediatrics and in dermatology, both at the University of Colorado. She completed a pediatric dermatology fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco. She volunteered on the ABD’s pediatric dermatology content development committee from 2013-2016 and joined the ABD Board of directors for a term starting in 2017.
Warren R. Heymann, MD (January 2017 - June 2026)

Dr. Heymann practices at HMGS Dermatology in Marlton, NJ. Additionally, he is a professor of medicine and pediatrics, and head of the Division of Dermatology at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University. He is a clinical professor of dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Heymann earned his MD at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. He completed his internship in Bellevue – New York University Medical Center. He completed his dermatology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and a fellowship in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania.
He is certified by the ABD in dermatology, dermatopathology, and pediatric dermatology and is participating in continuing certification.
Dr. Heymann served on the ABD’s pediatric dermatology curriculum committee from 2010-2013. He was elected to the ABD Board of Directors for a term starting in 2017.
Christine J. Ko, MD (January 2018 - June 2027)

Dr. Ko is a professor of dermatology and pathology at Yale School of Medicine. She is certified by the ABD in dermatology and dermatopathology and is participating in continuing certification.
Dr. Ko earned her MD from New York University School of Medicine. She completed her internship at UCLA, and her dermatology residency at the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on skin cancer, particularly squamous cell carcinoma and keratoacanthoma, in collaboration with researchers in the Department of Genetics and the Division of Dermatologic Surgery.
Dr. Ko served on the ABD’s dermatopathology content committee from 2011 to 2016. She was elected to the Board of Directors for a term starting in 2018.
Allison T. Vidimos, MD (January 2018 - June 2027)
Cleveland, OH
Dr. Vidimos is chair of the Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Dermatology and vice chair of the Dermatology and Plastic Surgery Institute. She is a staff physician in the department’s Micrographic Surgery and Oncology section and a professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. She is also program director of the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship.
Dr. Vidimos earned a BS in pharmacy from Purdue University and MD from Indiana University. She completed her dermatology residency and micrographic dermatologic surgery fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
She is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and in micrographic dermatologic surgery, and is participating in continuing certification.
She served on the Surgical Dermatology Content Development Committee from 2012-2014, and was elected to the Board of Directors for a term starting in 2018.
Christopher K. Bichakjian, MD (January 2019 - June 2028)

Dr. Bichakjian is professor of dermatology and chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He has expertise in cutaneous surgery and oncology, and has a special interest in Merkel cell carcinoma.
Dr. Bichakjian received his medical degree from Radboud University in The Netherlands. After relocating to the US, he completed his residency in dermatology and fellowship in micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology at Michigan Medicine. He subsequently practiced Mohs surgery in private practice. In 2004, Dr. Bichakjian was recruited back to Ann Arbor to join the faculty in the Department of Dermatology at Michigan Medicine.
He is board certified in general dermatology and MDS, and is participating in continuing certification. He has volunteered for the ABD since 2014, serving on the surgical dermatology curriculum committee before being elected to the Board of Directors for a term starting in 2019.
Keith A. Choate, MD (January 2019 - June 2028)
New Haven, CT
Dr. Choate is a professor of dermatology, genetics and pathology at Yale School of Medicine and a medical dermatologist who treats patients with a variety of skin conditions, including skin cancer, severe acne, psoriasis, and other conditions upon referral by a dermatologist. His expertise in genetic skin disorders leads to referrals from across the country and around the world.
Dr. Choate earned an MPhil and PhD from Yale in cell biology, then his MD from Yale School of Medicine. He completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
He is certified by the ABD in dermatology and is participating in continuing certification.
He served on the ABD’s science and research committee from 2013-2018. He was elected to the ABD’s Board of Directors for a term starting in 2019.
Karynne O. Duncan, MD (January 2020 - June 2029)
St. Helena, CA
Dr. Duncan founded Duncan Dermatology in St. Helena, CA, in 2003.
She received her MD from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, then completed a residency and was selected chief medical resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She then completed a residency in dermatology and was again chosen as a chief medical resident at Yale University School of Medicine. Before moving to the Napa Valley in 2002, she was on faculty at the University of Colorado in both the departments of Internal Medicine and Dermatology, and served as the Assistant Chief of Medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital.
She is board certified by both the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is participating in continuing certification.
She served on the ABD’s general dermatology content development committee from 2012-2014 and on the pediatric dermatology committee from 2015-2018. She was elected to the ABD Board of Directors for a term starting in 2020.
David M. Allen, MD (January 2021 - June 2030)

Dr. Allen practices general medical and surgical dermatology with Allen-Taintor Dermatology in Ogden, UT. He is also a clinical faculty member with the University of Utah Department of Dermatology.
He earned his MD from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his internship at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee and his dermatology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he served as Chief Resident. He joined Intermountain Skin, Cancer and Esthetics Center in 2003 which later became Allen/Taintor Dermatology.
He is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is participating in continuing certification. He has volunteered with the ABD since 2012, serving on the general dermatology continuing certification committee, then the surgical dermatology committee. He was elected to the Board of Directors for a term starting in 2021.
Mercedes E. Gonzalez, MD (January 2021 - June 2030)

Dr. Gonzalez is medical director at Pediatric Dermatology of Miami. Also, she is a clinical assistant professor at FIE Herbert School of Medicine and serves as a faculty advisor at UM Miller School of Medicine.
She earned her MD at New Jersey Medical School, Rutgers. She completed a residency in pediatrics at Columbia University and a fellowship in pain management at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. She then completed a residency in dermatology and a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at New York School of Medicine.
She is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and pediatric dermatology and is participating in continuing certification.
Dr. Gonzalez is chair of the ABD’s Diversity Committee. She was elected to the ABD Board of Directors for a term starting in 2021.
Jason R. Castillo, MD (young diplomate observer, January 2021 - June 2024)

Dr. Castillo is certified in general dermatology (2017) and in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery (2021) and is participating in continuing certification. He works in the Mohs Department of Kaiser Permanente’s Barranca Medical Office in Irvine, CA and is volunteer faculty at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He is an assistant clinical professor at the Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine.
As the Young Diplomate Observer, Dr. Castillo represents the viewpoint of newly certified dermatologists. This member is selected by the Board of Directors from a pool of nominees solicited from an open call to all diplomates. The person in this position serves a 3-year term and does not vote on Board matters. Dr. Castillo is the ABD’s first Young Diplomate Observer, appointed for a term starting in 2020.
He earned his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco. He completed an internal medicine internship at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, and his residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA, where he was chief resident. He completed his Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
Delphine J. Lee, MD (January 2022 - June 2031)
Torrance, CA
Dr. Lee is the Chief of Dermatology and Residency Program Director at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, as well as Director for the Dermatology Service Line for the Department of Health Services for Los Angeles County. She leads her immunology research team at the Lundquist Institute to investigate how to help immune systems fight cancer and improve outcomes for people with autoimmune diseases.
She is a health sciences clinical professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.
Dr. Lee earned her MD and PhD (Biomedical Sciences) at the University of California, San Diego. She completed her subspecialty training and advanced research program, and her dermatology residency and research fellowship at UCLA. She is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and is participating in continuing certification. She served on the ABD’s science and research committee from 2016-2021 before being elected to the ABD Board of Directors for a term starting in 2022.
Kanade Shinkai, MD (January 2022 - June 2031)

Kanade Shinkai is a faculty member of the UCSF Department of Dermatology and is a full professor of dermatology. She specializes in medical dermatology and inpatient dermatology consults. She is passionate about medical education and has recently served as residency program director at UCSF; she now serves as vice-chair of education for the department. She has served as the current editor-in-chief of JAMA Dermatology since July 2018.
Dr. Shinkai earned her MD and her PhD (biochemistry & molecular biology) at UCSF. She also completed her dermatology residency at UCSF. She is certified by the ABD in general dermatology and is participating in continuing certification.
She served on the General Dermatology Committee from 2014-2018 and was elected to the ABD Board of Directors in 2021 for a term starting in 2022.
Ryan W. Hick, MD (June 2023 - June 2032)
Dallas, TX
Dr. Hick practices in Dallas. He is certified in general dermatology by the ABD and in dermatopathology by the ABD and the American Board of Pathology. He is participating in continuing certification. He practices dermatopathology with a focus on clinicopathologic correlation of infectious and inflammatory disorders, melanocytic tumors, and immunofluorescence. He also treats a variety of medical dermatology patients at the Parkland Dermatology Clinic and assists in training dermatology residents and dermatopathology fellows.
Dr. Hick earned his MD at Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his dermatology residency at Duke University Medical Center where he served as chief resident. He completed his fellowship in dermatopathology at the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.
He served the ABD on the dermatopathology content development committee from 2011-2017.
Mary Gail Mercurio, MD (June 2023 - June 2032)
Rochester, NY
Dr. Mercurio is a professor of dermatology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where she is director of the residency training program. She is a medical dermatologist who treats a variety of skin conditions with particular interest in vulvar disorders and hormone-related skin conditions including dermatoses of pregnancy and hair loss.
She earned her MD from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, and completed her dermatology residency training at University Hospitals of Cleveland where she served as chief resident.
Dr. Mercurio is certified by the ABD and is participating in continuing certification. She served on the ABD’s in-training exam committee from 2000 to 2002, on the surgical dermatology curriculum committee from 2014-2016, and on the general dermatology content development committee from 2017-2019. She was elected to the ABD Board of Directors for a term starting in 2023.
Jerry Brewer, MD, MS (incoming Director, June 2024 - June 2033)

Dr. Brewer is a professor of dermatology and is the fellowship program director of Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology in the Department of Dermatology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He is certified by the ABD in dermatology and in micrographic dermatologic surgery. and is participating in continuing certification. Also, he has been a test item writer on the ABD’s surgical dermatology committee for eight years.
Dr. Brewer earned his MD at Wayne State University of Medicine. He completed his dermatology residency and his procedural dermatology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He earned a basic science master’s degree at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
Dr. Brewer has an interest in studying skin cancer in immunosuppressed patients, melanoma epidemiology, and skin cancer outcomes systematic reviews.
Andrea Zaenglein, MD (Incoming Director June 2024 – June 2033)
Hershey, PA
Dr. Zaenglein is a professor of dermatology and pediatrics at the Penn State University School of Medicine and a pediatric dermatologist at the Penn State/Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Children’s Hospital.
She earned her MD from Penn State College of Medicine. She completed her dermatology residency at Hahnemann University Hospital and her fellowship in pediatric dermatology at New York University Medical Center.
As a clinical investigator, she studies new and existing therapies for treating common pediatric skin diseases, including atopic dermatitis and acne vulgaris. Her research also focuses on evaluating safety and efficacy in the treatment of cutaneous diseases in children.
Dr. Zaenglein is certified by the ABD and is participating in continuing certification. She has served on the ABD’s pediatric test item writing committee for six years.
Aileen Shinaman, JD (public member, July 2023 - June 2026)

Ms. Shinaman is Senior Vice President and General Counsel for the Medical College of Wisconsin. Until recently, she was Vice President and General Counsel for the University of Rochester Medical Center.
A graduate of the State University of New York at Albany, Ms. Shinaman earned her JD at Albany Law School.
The public member is a non-physician with health-related experience or knowledge in areas relevant to the Board. This member votes on Board matters but does not vote in new director elections. Ms. Shinaman was selected from candidates who responded to the ABD’s call for self-nominations. All ABD diplomates were asked to encourage qualified individuals to apply for this important position.
