Exam Administration in 2018-2019

Please be advised that with the implementation of the American Board of Dermatology's Exam of the Future format for certification, the In-Training Exam will not be offered after 2017.

In 2018 we will offer:

The BASIC Exam (for first year Derm residents) on Thursday, April 12.
- This is an informational exam (not pass/fail)
- This exam will be administered at institutions, in a similar manner to the In-Training Exam.

The Online Practice Exam (for second and third year Derm residents) March 1 - March 30.
- This exam is offered to help residents prepare for the traditional Certification Exam in 2018 and 2019, in place of the In-Training Exam.
- For purposes of evaluating resident progress, this exam is functionally the same as the ITE.
- This exam may be administered in the manner most convenient for programs:

Option 1: Remote Proctor
- Residents take the exam on a webcam-equipped computer in a private location of their choice.
- The exam may be taken any Tuesday – Friday (4:00 am – 10:00 pm eastern time) between March 1 – 30. This ensures the availability of technical support from our exam delivery vendor.
- Residents from the same program must take the exam on the same day.

 Option 2: Local Proctoring
- Programs proctor the exam locally at their institution, in a similar manner to previous administrations of our In-Training Exam (ITE), with all residents taking the exam together in a single room.
- The exam may be taken any Monday – Friday between March 1 – 30.
- Programs do not need to reserve a date in advance.
- Residents from the same program must take the exam on the same day.

NOTE: We will permit interested programs to do a mix of remote and local proctoring. However, all residents must take the exam on the same day, regardless of the method of proctoring. Programs opting for this mixed administration may not give the exam on a Monday since our vendor's remote proctoring system is not available on Mondays.

In 2019 we will offer:

The BASIC Exam (for first year Derm residents) on Thursday, April 11, 2019

The Online Practice Exam (for third year Derm residents) March 1 - March 29.

The CORE Exam:
- March (Thursday, March 28, 2019): second year Derm residents
- July (Thursday, July 25, 2019): third year Derm residents
- November (Thursday, November 14, 2019): third year Derm residents
* Third year Derm residents will have another opportunity to take the CORE in March 2020 (weekend: dates TBD).

We prepared an infographic to demonstrate the exam administration pathway for residents through 2020.
