DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS AND DATE OF EXAMINATION

Deadline for receipt of applications for the 2009 recertification examination is December 15, 2008. Note that 2009 is the last online “open-book” recertification examination. Beginning in 2010, the examination will be a proctored examination. Click here to apply.  You will need your username and password to login to apply.  If you don’t know your username and password, call the ABD office at 313-874-1088 or email the office at abderm@hfhs.org.  The fee for the recertification examination is $900.  The fee may be sent in the form of a check or credit card number (the Board accepts American Express, MasterCard, or VISA).  The examination will be available online to approved candidates from May 1 to June 12, 2009.  Notification of performance on the examination and other pertinent related information will be emailed to the candidates approximately 8-10 weeks after June 12.

Diplomates with time-limited certificates may apply to take the recertification examination any year in which it is offered.  However, for formal (official) completion of the Recertification Process, candidates must take either of the 3 recertification examinations that immediately precede the expiration of their time-limited certificate.  In other words, a diplomate will only be granted a new ten-year certificate after passing the recertification examination in year 8, 9, or 10 of his/her ten-year cycle.

Diplomates with lifetime certification may elect to pursue voluntary recertification in any year the examination is offered.  We are beginning to see the first practical steps taken by insurers to link reimbursement to participation in maintenance of certification (MOC) programs. Additionally, the Federation of State Medical Boards is preliminarily considering linking licensure to participation in MOC. Any questions or correspondence relating to the recertification process or maintenance of certification process should be directed to the Executive Director of the American Board of Dermatology.

ALTERNATE PATHWAY

Diplomates who require a proctored recertification examination prior to 2010 to satisfy state medical licensure requirements, may elect to take a shortened version of the certifying examination of the Board administered annually in August.  Contact the Board office for further details.
