NBME Guidelines for Submission of Digital Images - ABD

Please follow the guidelines below when scanning images or when deciding which images to submit. From the high quality files sent, Web-ready files can be easily created and manipulated.

FILE FORMATS JPEG (*.JPG) "High" or "exellent" image quality compression only.
TIFF (*.TIF) LZW compressed or uncompressed.
Adobe Photoshop (*.PSD) Any version.
IMAGE RESOLUTION 300 DPI for color and greyscale images If submitting a line drawing (pure black and white), 1200 DPI is preferred or they can be saved in a resolution-free format such as Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, or EPS.
IMAGE DIMENSION SIZE

4" to 7" wide
within 6" high

Within 7" wide for complex images (detailed images, images with text).
3" wide for simple images.
When in doubt, submit images at 7" wide.
Digital camera:
1000 x 1500 pixels
Images taken with digital cameras must be at least 640 x 480 pixels, but the higher the resolution the better. 1000 x 1500 pixels is preferred.
IMAGE MODE RGB or CMYK for color
Greyscale for greyscale
Black and white mode (called 'bitmap mode') for pure black and white images only.
When in doubt, save in RGB mode.

 

DO NOT SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:

  • Images taken with cellular phones
  • Images taken with personal digital cameras
  • Powerpoint slides
  • Images embedded in Microsoft Word documents
